At  ICON YACHTS the main priority remains to protect the health and welfare of our team, our contractors and the wider community.

Therefore, we are adapting our normal routine and regular patterns of work for the greater good of the community and, in particular, to protect the most vulnerable within it, whilst continuing with business as usual with as little disruption as possible.

We are open and operational while following the government and local government guidelines.

At times such as these, it is vitally important that collectively, we work together to flatten the curve of COVID-19 and to enable social and economic recovery as soon as possible.

Returning from the Caribbean, what to do?

The ports of the Netherlands are still open

The Netherlands is one of the few countries in the EU that still has open ports for yachts.

As we have seen in Spain, France, and Monaco all ports are closed and no arrival nor departures are accepted, no anchorage is allowed in French nor Monegasque water, furthermore, no works are allowed to be carried.

However, Dutch Harbours are still open and welcoming yachts who have signed a Bill of Health (contact us to get a copy)

The nearest port to the shipyard is the Port of Harlingen which is still open, the staff is working from home and has rotational shifts, but otherwise, it is business as usual, 24/7 operational service.

Crew Arrival

Superyachts are free to enter the harbor provided there is an only crew on board, no guests.

Non-EU crew who are visa required workers (a.o. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa) are admitted, but cannot stay and have to leave the Netherlands within 4 hours or stay on board and do not leave the yacht. In our case, they are free to move about on the sheltered and fenced ICON premises.

EU crew are free to move, but of course, have to adhere to the Corona rules and advice issued by Dutch government and ICON Corona Protocol.

Standard check-in arrival protocol following harbor procedures (copy of passports, crew list, entrance badges, etc.)

All new crew joining under normal crew rotation schedules need to be in quarantine for 5 days before entering the shipyard. If they have no symptoms and sign the protocol statement then they are allowed in our premises.

The shipyard is located in Harlingen, which is a rural area and it is  still considered a safe area with a low rate of infections, if not one of the lowest in The Netherlands.  The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment states that the number of hospital admissions remains stable and low in the provinces of Friesland. So far no there  have been no positive cases in  our region, nor in Harlingen nor in the shipyard.

The Netherlands is known for its universal and excellent standard of healthcare and it’s rated as one of the best healthcare systems in the world.  The local hopsitals are considered as top hospitals in the country. (tell me more about Leewarden or other hospitals?)

For more info on COVID-19 in the NL:

Refit works

For now in The Netherlands,  refit works and services are still allowed by the Government, under the condition to follow a strict health protocol which we have in place at ICON Yachts.

In fact, most super yacht shipyards and fellow builders are still open.

On the production side, we are still working, our subcontractors are still operational and motivated, and we continue to follow the Government’s guidelines.

We currently subcontractors in our facilities who say that they feel safer here than going anywhere else currently.

Employees at the yard

Our current priority is the health of our employees, our suppliers, our subcontractors and of course those crew members on our current projects. From our corporate offices, about 50% of employees are working from home. We have applied a rotational system, to make sure that all our key positions remain covered; maintaining the best protection of each other.

Moreover, office space has been rearranged offering wider spread out our work stations, maintaining separation. No handshaking, clean door handles etc.

We have canceled all visits that are not essential for ongoing production. We are doing video calls to replace face to face meetings.

Health Protocol

  • We have a strict protocol in place for all of our employees and visitors. If the protocol is not met, then visitors cannot  enter the shipyard.
  • We have implemented a continuous thorough clean cycle of our offices, sheds, and yachts under construction to help minimize the spread of the virus.
  • Our staff and outside workers have been issued with face masks and gloves and have to respect the basic rules such as maintaining a safe distance between each other, no handshakes, and washing their hands regularly, as well as before and after work.

Contact us for more info on arrival, port authorities, etc. we are happy to help!

Currently based in ICON YACHTS  is the 69.15-meter expedition superyacht Game Changer, fresh from a successful 2019 having circumnavigated the world.

The start of 2020 sees Game Changer using Icon as a base as she oversees warranty work and begins the process of making adaptations to the boat in order to prepare for the ambitious missions she’s embarking on later in the year.

Combing her unique 5-star resort dive set up, helicopter operations and submarine capabilities, with her future cruising grounds shows she really is living up to her namesake, as a ‘Game Changer’ when it comes to expedition yachts, blazing a path for the future.

An exciting day at ICON YACHTS as the shipyard launched their latest conversion explorer super yacht the 68 meter Project Ragnar.  The 2,450 GT ICE-breaker explorer super yacht emerged from her shed showing off her intimidating exterior style designed by RWD yacht design this morning.

The original vessel, ‘Sanaborg,’ was initially built as an ice breaking multi-purpose support supply vessel in Holland in 2012. Ragnar has been transformed into a stunning and unique Arctic explorer superyacht.

Designed by RWD in the UK, her unique style draws on a fusion of inspirations including medieval war craftsmanship with sleep likes of contemporary design and British heritage. Ragnar combines the  capabilities of a serious, ice-breaking  Arctic explorer, with the comfort and luxury of a world-class superyacht.

She will be a very rare example of a genuine explorer luxury superyacht with certified ICE Class A1 super hull. An LY3-classed vessel with Arctic explorer capabilities, Project RAGNAR owes her ice-breaking capability to unique ICE class PC5-rated electric-driven ice pods. She offers an incredible range of 6,000 nautical miles, enabling her owners and guests to explore the most remote areas of the planet.

The 2 year  conversion includes an increase of luxury accommodation areas, a functional designated deck for toys, and fully-certified helicopter landing pad.

Ragnar will be available for charter via Burgess yachts.

Following multiple sales during the recent Monaco Yacht Show, Sunseeker and ICON Yachts are delighted today to announce the sale of the company ’s first 161 Yacht with the client signing a Letter of Intent. The deal was brokered by Sunseeker Monaco, part of the Sunseeker London Group.

Sunseeker’s flagship Superyacht model will be built by ICON Yachts in Harlingen, Holland and is the result of Sunseeker’s desire to offer its clients even larger superyachts built in metal.

Delivery will take place in September 2022. In the meantime, discussions are ongoing for confirmation of hulls number two and three.

The Superyacht division, which was officially launched at the Monaco Yacht Show, further strengthens Sunseeker’s success in the superyacht category having already delivered 137 Yachts over 100ft since 2000.

Weighing in at <500GT, this new tri-deck yacht follows the iconic Sunseeker exterior lines and offers exceptional space and volume. Her interior can be styled to each owner’s taste via Sunseeker’s unique ‘Bespoke’ service. The theme throughout is one of space and flexibility, maximising volume and providing compelling features to enhance enjoyment on board. The plunge pool on the main deck is one such feature, as well as the generous beach club that creates an incredible space for a day near the water. The Sunseeker 161 Yacht sees ten guests accommodated in five cabins in the standard guest configuration, with scope for up to 12 guests dependent upon the chosen general arrangement.

ICON Yachts has the pleasure of inviting you to the pinnacle of the yachting calendar: the Monaco Yacht Show from the 25-28 of September 2019.

ICON Yachts are pleased to announce the appointment of two new Central Agents for the sale of the 84-metre superyacht currently under construction at the yard’s facilities in the Netherlands. Scheduled for delivery in 2021, the world-renowned brokerage companies Burgess and IYC represent the 84-metre ICON 280 for sale.

Available for delivery sooner than any other large yacht currently in build at a premium shipyard, the ICON 280 offers an excellent opportunity for prospective owners, with a high level of customisation still available. She features naval architecture by the Dutch experts at Van Oossanen Naval Architects, while the studio of Tim Heywood undertook her exterior design. Interior design options have been prepared by Gimena Mazzeo Design, though her new owner is welcome to commission interior design by their preferred designer.

Upon completion, the ICON 280 is set to be one of the most technologically advanced superyachts in the world. Powered by ultra-efficient twin 1,500kW CAT diesel engines and clean-emission generators, the ICON 280 incorporates retractable stabilisers by Rolls-Royce and the latest bow thrusters for quiet and comfortable operation.

Amongst her stand out features is a touch-and-go foredeck helipad for EC 135 or equivalent, and a large, eye-catching infinity pool on the main deck aft. Making the very best of the yachting lifestyle is at the heart of the ICON 280, with palatial main and upper deck saloons, a variety of al fresco dining possibilities and a sun deck brimming with entertainment and relaxation options. A versatile area, the sun deck includes a forward-facing Jacuzzi flanked with sun pads, a bar, lounge, Teppanyaki grill and impressive space for up to 200 guests for special events and occasions.

Inside, she accommodates up to 19 guests (12 while under charter) across seven cabins, including a 60-square-metre VIP suite on the main deck, and an incredible 126-square-metre owner’s suite forward on the upper deck. An indoor cinema and wine tasting bar with extensive cellar space on the bridge deck complete the package.

In a truly momentous step, Sunseeker International has announced plans to move into the world of metal-built yachts as it looks to capitalise on its success in the superyacht market and the demand it sees from owners for even larger Sunseeker vessels. This exciting development will see the British brand partner with renowned Dutch builders, ICON Yachts, to produce a new 48-metre yacht, the first of which will launch in 2021.
This new venture moves the brand into a completely different method of build for the first time in its 50-year history, but the idea behind this move is certainly not a recent one as Sunseeker International Sales Director, Sean Robertson explains: “We have wanted to build larger vessels for some time; we know there is demand there for larger Sunseeker yachts as the 155 Yacht proved. The decision to stop building that model was a commercial one based on space and capacity and certainly not due to lack of demand, so we knew we needed to rethink our
approach to this size of vessel and have spent considerable time looking at various opportunities. A move into metal also means there is no ceiling as to how big we can go in the future, but obviously this requires different expertise and so it was essential to find the right partner to support the project. Finding experience and expertise in metal build was not the issue. Finding a yard that shared the same progressive, innovative spirit to create something truly special and, most importantly, one which will provide us with the flexibility to build a true Sunseeker was the challenge. We have certainly found all of that with ICON.”

ICON Yachts was founded in late 2005 by Ton Van Dam and a group of investors. The founders were then joined by business partners, including the company’s current Chief Executive Officer, Jen Wartena. Rather than building unique, one-off custom superyachts that would require three or more years to design and construct, ICON Yachts developed a groundbreaking ‘blueprint’ hull which allows owners to fully customise their yachts from thewaterline up. ICON has more than delivered on this concept, producing several superyachts to date within exceptionally short build times, and in the two-year range. In addition, ICON is dedicated to maintaining one of the greenest shipyards in the yachting industry, outfitting each yacht it builds with equipment to help reduce her environmental impact. Jen Wartena, CEO of ICON Yachts, comments: “There is a great synergy between ICON and Sunseeker because we are combining both of our strengths, our capacity and metal yacht building capabilities with Sunseeker’s sales expertise and marketing power. I am confident about the partnership because for the past few years there has been a high demand for Dutch pedigree yachts in this size range. We believe the Sunseeker by ICON will revolutionise the industry in a positive way. It is an exciting period for ICON Yachts and this new partnership with Sunseeker is part of our ongoing growth strategy where we are investing heavily in facilities and people to improve our capability and capacity.” The new yacht will be built in the ICON yard in the Netherlands using a proven fast displacement hull design, but the naval architecture, design and engineering will be unmistakably Sunseeker.

Sean Robertson explains: “This will certainly not be a badge engineering exercise. We are an established superyacht brand in our own right and so we are merely combining the steel build expertise of ICON with our design DNA, technical expertise and market know-how. She will absolutely be a Sunseeker.”

Sunseeker’s first foray into the superyacht market came with the introduction of the now iconic 105 Yacht in 2001. Since then, Britain’s biggest boat builder has seen unprecedented growth in the sector, delivering more than 125 yachts over 100 feet and firmly placing the Poole-based builder in the top three superyacht builders in the world. This new partnership with ICON is the next stage in that remarkable growth story and will be marketed and sold by Sunseeker under the “Sunseeker by ICON” nomenclature.

The new 48m tri-deck yacht follows the iconic Sunseeker exterior lines and offers exceptional space and volume, with an interior that can be styled to each owner’s unique taste via Sunseeker’s unique ‘Bespoke’ service. The theme throughout is one of space and flexibility, maximising volume and providing compelling features to enhance enjoyment on board. Many of these features are usually only associated with much larger craft including the plunge pool on the main deck and the exceptional beach club with drop down bulwarks and transom to create an incredible space for relaxing or entertaining close to the water. Standard guest configuration is for 10 guests in five cabins, with scope for up to 12 to be accommodated depending upon layout chosen and hull #1 is due for launch in Spring 2021!

ICON Yachts has the pleasure of inviting you to the pinnacle of the yachting calendar: the Monaco Yacht Show. Due to the increase of number of refit projects at ICON YACHTS, the shareholders of the shipyard have decided to expand their facilities by building a new floating shed in order to welcome more and bigger projects.

The new shed will mean an increase of capacity of almost 100 with dimensions of 130 meter long x 30 meters wide with 28 meter of mast clearance. The construction works have already started this month, and completion is expected at the end of this year.

Quote from a captain, “us captains always prefer to stay in the water”. – captain of one the most prestigious yachts in the world. that is why a floating dock for refits makes sense.

ICON Yachts is growing exponentially, over the past year ICON Yachts has recruited over 25 new employees. There is over 300 meters of yacht projects currently at the yard with the new developments coming soon!

North European builds prefer to do their refit and maintenance at ICON Yachts to maintain their pedigree, be closer to the original manufacturers to reduce travel costs, and make sure the refit projects will be on time and on budget, no surprises.

Recent refit launches include: MY Secret, 82 meter Abeking & Rasmussen; the 67 meter M/Y Global, Lurssen; M/Y Virginian 62 meter Feadship and other confidential projects.

ICON Yachts has officially revealed their latest 84-meter super yacht under construction in the Netherlands: the ICON280. The secretive project designed by world-renowned designer Tim Heywood is now listed on the market, presenting a unique opportunity for potential owners to obtain a yacht of this size and pedigree.

With progress well underway at ICON Yachts’ facilities in Harlingen, the Dutch shipyard has revealed the first details of the impressive new 84-metre superyacht ICON280. Owners are presented with a unique opportunity to take delivery just 24 months following the signing. Not only does this offer the rare chance to take delivery of an 80+ meter vessel of Dutch Pedigree in substantially less time than usual, but also allows owners a rare opportunity to customize the interior design to complement their individual tastes perfectly.

On board, she accommodates up to 19 guests in several elegant cabins – 12 when operating under commercial rules. Certainly, a highlight of life on board is the 126-square-metre master stateroom, located on the Upper Deck, incorporating sea balconies and expansive glazing for spectacular 270-degree vistas.

Jen Wartena, CEO at ICON Yachts, comments on the exciting new project: “The ICON280 is a yacht of the very best quality, ready to sail anywhere in the world. She boasts an imaginative interior, with surfaces and finishes that catapult this yacht into the next decade. Contemporary yet timeless, she is befitting of the most discerning owner or guest.”

Just a handful of ICON 280’s reasons to appeal to that most discerning of an owner is a wide array of features to suit any aspect of yacht life. From exploring hidden coves and isolated beaches with the yacht’s selection of tenders and toys to unwinding in the onboard hammam and sauna before slipping into the 8-person Jacuzzi on the sun deck.

Exterior designer, Tim Heywood, comments on the development of the iconic design, which saw the design grow by 8-meters overall as the project progressed.
“The construction of such a yacht is an incredible team effort, under the guiding baton of the client. The enthusiasm shown by all at ICON has been rewarded by a truly remarkable achievement. The more developed design now boasting a touch-and-go Heli Deck and larger infinity pool aft, all benefiting from naval architecture by Van Oossanen, and the experienced engineering input and superb covered building facilities of the ICON yard in northern Holland The ICON280 is a yacht of the very best quality, ready to sail anywhere in the world.”

The ICON 280 is listed at an attractive price which is available upon application. Delivery is scheduled for 2021. More information and images will be revealed soon.

ICON YACHTS is proud to announce the new conversion project called Project RAGNAR. The original vessel previously called <Sanaborg> was initially built as an ice breaking multipurpose support supply vessel in Holland in 2012. Yes, a snow room onboard! During the conversion, several tanks will be removed and converted into a Leisure/ Spa area. It also has a ski room to store all your ski gear, a boot room, and 1 swimming pool and 1 jacuzzi. Due to its low draft of only 3.15mt the vessel can go quite near shores and beaches, and thanks to its air- cooled generator and she has the capability to beach the vessel. “ICON Yachts” together with “Erdivicki Yacht Design,” and “Bristow-Holmes” are thrilled to announce that the Keel Laying Ceremony for the stunning 46 Metre Yacht “The Gotham Project,” officially took place on Friday the 14th of July. This ICONIC event took place at the “Bloemsma” Aluminum facility in Makkum, in the Dutch province of Friesland. A Keel Laying Ceremony is the formal recognition of the start of the vessel’s construction and signifies the first of many important events throughout the project. Attended by approximately sixty key individuals, the Keel Laying ceremony is a historic moment that will be remembered and cherished by all involved. The keel laying ceremony marks the beginning of the physical construction of “The Gotham Project” following nearly twelve months of project planning, design and naval architecture. After careful consideration and tendering process, “Bloemsma” were the natural choice when it came to selecting a specialist aluminum co-maker to construct what many have dubbed, “The most progressive and ICONIC super yacht under construction”. “Bloemsma” boast a renowned racing pedigree thanks to numerous regatta wins from their J-Class and Truly Classic Aluminum sailing yachts. The design department at ICON Yachts states “We are very excited that after winning the prestigious Yacht and Aviation Awards in London with Ivan Erdevicki back in 2013 the initial concept has matured into the stunning Gotham project. The team of ICON Yachts, Bristow Holmes and Erdevicki Design are all enthused by the vision and passion of the client creating his very personal dream yacht’ Harry Bristow-Holmes of Bristow-Holmes states “Today is a remarkable day for myself and everyone involved in the project. Twenty-two months ago, I met the team at ICON for the first time and shared with them my vision for a state of the art, exciting, radical and ICONIC 45 Meter Super Yacht. Many thought I was crazy, many thought there was no market, but the team at ICON and Erdivicki shared my vision. Some twenty-two months later and here we are, welding the first piece of “The Gotham Project” into position and in less than 24 months’ time we’ll be delivering this truly iconic vessel to her very excited owner.” Jen Wartena of ICON was quick to point out “We have rigged the “Bloemsma” facility with state of the art time lapse cameras so we can capture every mark, tack and weld of the vessel throughout the period and we look forward to sharing it with you all in due course.” For now, its official, “The Gotham Project” has begun…

MY Legend, one of the four yachts entered for this year’s Rebuilt category stood out from the others. When an owner’s objective is to create a world-roaming expedition yacht with Lloyds A1 Ice Class, and Polar classification, an ex-Russian tug is a pretty good starting point, despite the vessel being 43 years old. This vessel had already been converted into a superyacht but the new owner’s additional requirement for full SOLAS and MCA 13-36 passenger status meant that only the hull, which was extended by 3.6 metres with a remodelled stern to incorporate a bathing platform and 16-person swimming pool, and her main engines could remain intact. The superstructure was modified to soften her lines but perhaps the most difficult aspects of the rebuild, which was carried out by ICON Yachts, was the installation of a fully classified helipad with refueling facilities while bringing her into SOLAS compliance. In the view of the judges, this was a highly successful rebuilt that readied her for operations in high-latitudes, where she has already cruised. We are happy to share this success together with Diana Yacht Design, Verkerk Projects and for all those involved – our preferred suppliers and contractors – without which ICON Yachts could not have achieved this remarkable triumph. The yacht’s unmistakable and bold exterior styling was perhaps enough to achieve this alone. However, when further combined with a high level of specification, unparalleled performance and a Dutch shipyard with a thirst to break into the 40-50M market, the Gotham Project is clearly destined to become a stand out superyacht when delivered to her Owner in 2019.” – James Hutchinson, HYC CEO

Jen Wartena CEO of ICON Yachts comments “This project has been one of the most innovative and exciting projects we have been involved in. It’s the culmination of a great deal of work spanning over 22 months since our initial discussions at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2015 through to the signing of the ship building contract earlier this week. Myself and the whole team at ICON Yachts are extremely proud to be building this particular vessel and look forward to future hull’s for future clients”. Naval Architect Perry van Oossanen explains: “We feel privileged to be selected as the primary naval architect for such a bold project. Thanks to the open mindset of the owner and his team, this yacht makes a perfect showcase of the capabilities of combining our patented FDHF with the Hull Vane®. This fully optimized performance package will effect 15-20{e796ec09f18866c6a5fd6e7c97151135fe5f6fa3d40ef10f471ac6b68393efed} lower fuel consumption and approximately 1,5 knots additional maximum speed, resulting in a truly remarkable 24,5 knots max speed, considering the installed power.” Delivery is due for June 2019 and keel laying to take place in October 2017, these are exciting times for everyone involved!

In 2015 ICON Yachts rebuilt this unique ice-breaking yacht extensively in joint collaboration with Verkerk Yachting Projects. Resulting from this, she is now amongst the first ice-capable yachts with Lloyds 1A ice class in the world! Icon Yachts are proud to have launched the 77 meter MY LEGEND in March this year after an extensive refit and conversion. Finishing the project in such a quick delivery time is quite impressive considering more than 100 tons of steel and aluminum were renewed, and the project even included lengthening of the stern by 3.6 meters. Unlike any other yacht in the world, she is really a one of a kind explorer vessel that has been completely redesigned by our team of experts here at ICON. Her explorer exterior with fully classified hull is such a contrast to her elegant luxurious interior boasting a Balinese-themed spa and cinema room. MY LEGEND can accommodate 26 guests in a total of 13 uniquely designed staterooms, which ICON detailed with the highest skill and precision for the Owner.  Launching party will be held at the shipyard on October 28th, 2016.

About the ICON Islander Islander is the epitome of a pocket superyacht in every way. Built by the world renowned Dutch megayacht manufacturer ICON Yachts, the designer Ken Freivokh, who is better known for creations such as Maltese Falcon & IV. Islander is perhaps the only yacht in her size range to ever boast such impressive credentials. Islander is designed to be a luxury long range cruiser, with all the amenities of a much larger yacht, but packaged in a more manageable and smaller vessel for the owner who does not want the overheads associated with a larger yacht and more crew. With a cruising range of 2,200 nautical miles made possible by her hybrid propulsion, Islander is capable extended cruising, giving her owner unprecedented exploring possibilities previously only seen in traditional full displacement explorer vessel in this size range. Islander takes these aspects and combines them with the most popular features seen in production flybridge yachts, to give you the best of both worlds.
